I was told not do it for them because they may not sleep in it. I was instructed to put the hay on top of the cage so they could pull it through and build the nest on their own but they haven't.

  1. they will when they are ready.  They are in a new environment...so they need time to adjust.  They usually don't make nests until they are comfortable in their surroundings.  Keep anice regular routine with them, also regular feeding schedules and they love a nice sunny room. This should help them acclimate.

  2. you can put the nesting material anywhere in the cage and they will use it but the nest is only for mating if you don't want them to mate then you don't need to put a nest in their .

  3. If you just got 2 baby finches they arent old enough to be breeding. But it never hurts to buy one of those cone shaped wicker nest boxes for them from the pet store. Place some cotton in it for nesting meterial or buy some of that nesting string they like building their own nests with. Do not use HAY no telling what type of deseases they can get from that stuff. Finch need soft bedding to nest in,  not straw or hay or grass.

  4. Hi,

If they are young birds then they will not build a nest or use a nest, they only display this behaviour when ready to breed. So young birds won't, but just leave them to it and let them do what they like. With birds then people and books tell you one thing but most of the time birds will do the opposite.

  5. If they're babies, they're not going to build a nest.  They're sitting on sticks?  If they're very young, you could maybe put a small shallow bowl, lined, on the bottom of the cage in case they want to go in it.  Birds build nests (usually in nest baskets you buy & hang in cage) when they want to breed........

  6. (Weaving a nest does not necessarily mean they want to breed.  If a male finch goes around after the female with nesting material in his beak, that is a possible sign he wants to mate.)

But since they haven't touched the nesting material yet, my guess is that the finches are too young right now to be able to build a nest.  As they get older, they will probably eventually get around to doing it.

As for sticking nesting materials in the nest, it depends on the bird.  Some will not lay in it if human hands have touched it (smell is different.  however, my finches personally wouldn't care and just hop in).

  7. Baby Finches will not build a nest .

The best thing to do for them is get a wicker nest basket or an open fronted nest box for finches ,you should be able to buy these at any Pet store.
