  1. rats and mice usually don't bite at all. just handle him allot. when you feed him make sure you let him know that your feeding him, make him see you.

      hope this helps

  2. Get it to trust you by always speaking to it in a kind and gentle voice. stroke it often so it will be used to your hand. Gradually, you can be assured that it will trust you. :)

  3. I'm working on getting my new feeder rat (kept as a pet rat, thank god) used to being handled, too!

Getting Her To Eat Food From Your Hands

Put a seed of some type or other very small treat in her cage and keep the cage open. When she begins to eat the treat (which may take a while, but be patient and don't move the treat), start to say something like "yum yums" that will associate the word with eating. When she finishes, take another treat and put it in your fingers. Put the treat up to her nose and say the eating word and wait until she grabs it. While she eats, say the eating word a few times over and over gently again. Do this a couple times and then start to drag the treat along to the cage door to make her walk out of the cage. When she peeks her head out, give her the treat and say the eating word. Let her run off with the treat.

    More Trust Exercises

There is a lot of websites for training rats to trust humans. Try visiting a few. Google "How Can I Get My Rat To Trust Me?" and maybe you'll find a good website like I did.

Good luck with your new rat! What color is she? Just wondering! =] My rat that I'm training is a tan hooded rat, his name is Sammy!

  4. Pick her up and hold her let her sniff you. Also If you put a little bit of peanut butter on your finger she will l**k it off (she will kinda bite at first).

  5. Give her a few days to adjust to her new surroundings, and then start handling her every day. Even if you pick her up for a couple of minutes at a time, it will help her get used to you. One of my more skittish rats became much friendlier after I had to treat her with medication for 2 weeks (which involved me picking her up twice a day on a schedule). So, just handle her.

  6. are calling your rat a handle?

or did you mean to say handled?

lol sorry.....just try to get her to take food from your hand at first so shell get to trust you.

one of my rats wont come near me, and if i pick it up it gets the runs so now i refuse to pick it up and its still terrified. make sure yours doesnt end up like that!

  7. Christie B is needlessly harsh in her answer, but she does have a point in that you really should consider getting her a friend. Rats are quite social and you'll see her personality improve by MILES if you get another. It's also not much more work to have two rats than one, and your rat will be so much better off because of it.

As for handling, feeder rats need lots of patience and love to become used to you, but it can happen! At first, just talk to her while she's in the cage. Don't stick your hand in or try to grab at her. Just talk to her and get her used to you being around. Read a book next to the cage so you are around and she can see & smell you. Next, open the cage door and put a treat in your hand. Don't reach towards her, just set your hand on the cage floor and let her come to you. Do this as often as you like for a while.

Well, once you have been getting her used to you for a day or two, you can start picking her up. You want to handle her as much as you can. The more you've got her with you, the most used to you she'll be.

This takes a lot of time, and you don't want to rush it and make her more frightened of you than she was before. But just be patient and give her lots of treats and she should be all yours before long!

  8. Why on earth did you get ONE rat!!!!!!! Obviously you didnt do your research. You always need to get atleast TWO rats. they are very social animals and need company no matter how much you play with her! If you want her to die an early age of depression, then by all means, leave her by herself. BUT if you actually love her, get her a partener. Next time do your research.
