I just got a fish, help please!?

Question

I was wondering two things:

1. How can you find out what the gender of a goldfish is? I mean by just looking at it.

2. My goldfish is black, and small. I don't know what gender it is, but could I get some good name ideas? It doesn't move around much, and it has really big eyes.

You can't really tell until it's mature.  At about 8-10 inches a male will get white spots on it's gill covers, a female will have a more rounded appearance.

once they are adults during spawning season the males will get white dots on there gills and females will get a rounder body shape.

Please make sure you are taking care of the fish and you have the proper housing/water conditions for it. a black moor goldfish like you're describing is going to need at least 20 gallons of water. Contrary to popular belief goldfish are not good beginner fish. Here is a page that can help you figure out how to take care of it. Goldfish are also cold water fish so keep the tank away from windows and don't put a heater in it. They produce A LOT of waste so you will need to change the water very, very often especially if it's in a small tank. Because they need cold water, you should not keep them with any other fish.
