  1. Practice, and learn to breathe.

    That's all I can say.

I don't play the western concert flute, but I play Native American flute, and some recorder.

    Good luck! :)

  2. You have done the right thing. You are taking lessons.  We don't expect you to be able to play without instruction.

If it does not come real easy at first, It will get easier.

  3. I have the perfect tip for you!! You can practice making sound come out by blowing into a bottle that has some liquid it in.  You want to blow "over and down" the hole. This will give your lips some muscle memory as far s the parsing your lips.  Once you're able to make a sound come out of the bottle, you're ready for the flute!  Sounds silly, I know...but just try it.

  4. If this if your first time playing flute, I wouldn't do ANYTHING before meeting with your lessons teacher for the first time.  They will give you educated instructions on how to assemble your flute, hold it correctly, and how to form your mouth (embouchure) to create the right sound.  Don't try anything on your own just yet because it can lead to forming bad habits and you risk damaging your flute if you don't know how to assemble and hold it correctly.

Good for you though for getting lessons!  Good luck!

  5. :) you'll find your self obliged to control your mouth and tongue, don't worry it'll be easy and fast

O_E exercise for the mouth muscles, just repeat those two letters successively.

Your lips, should have the form of "whistling" the lower is back the upper is more advanced as if you'll put your lower lip under your upper front teeth.

there are types of lips positions depending on the octave hight (pitch).

Fingers, NO long nails, nor too short for your best :)

Breath control, inhale fast, exhale will contain many techniques this time :)

You'll learn a cool thing, sometimes you'll play long riffs so you'll play and meantime inhale and exhale, you'll see it's cool, like air compression inside your mouth.

    Best of luck.

  6. Make sure to keep a firm embrasure (mouth muscles) and lean to breathe fast also make sure you hold your flute up

  7. Hey Girl,

    YEAH!!

A flute AND lessons!!!   That is a winning combination :))

So if you are having your first lesson in three days,  it is better for your new teacher to give you the best tips,  as she will be with you in person and we are just typing out ideas which you might misconstrue or confuse.  You don't want to start off on the wrong foot.

My suggestion is though....  be excited and stay enthused.  Playing flute is alot of fun and being in the band is a wonderful music education.   You just have to remember how important setting aside a time to practice every day is... and that is hard for some people who have never had to cut out a piece of their day for a specific activity.   Plan 1/2 hour at first... every day but perhaps give yourself a break on Sunday.   The better you get on playing flute, the more you will enjoy practicing, and the more you practice,  the better you will get.... AND the better you get,  the higher chair you will deserve which will also make you want to practice more.   Believe me,  it is a domino effect.  Another thing I can request is that you ask your teacher the best way to care for your flute.  Taking care of your instrument is as important as putting it together to play.   You will depend on it being in A-1 condition, so it is your responsibility to maintain it every day.

So,  everything else should come from the teacher.  She has her way of introducing things and you should put 100% of your confidence in her.  Be positive and ask questions when you need to know something.

You will be fine and soon be playing flute like a natural.  :))

    Thanks for reading.

    Best of Luck!!
