I just got a hamster and I live in a place where I cant get a hamster cage because there isnt many hamsters here... Someone is coming from the states and im going to order it online and hes going to bring it in 15 days.. I have put him in a basket with toilet paper, food in a plastic jar, water in a basin and a couple of other things... Is there anything else I can do, to make sure he'll survive till he gets a more interesting cage??? Help!

  1. Hamsters chew, so you need something he can't chew through, an aquarium, a fish bowl, a pickle jar (gallon size!), a plastic box with rounded corners.

Hamsters breathe, so you need holes in the top. If you put them on the sides, he will stand up and chew and make the holes bigger.

You really need a water bottle, not a dish.

He will make a wet mess with the bowl, you have probably already found that out!

Give him water type veggies and fruits, lettuce, not recommended for anything other than water value is okay until you get a real water bottle, watermelon, peaches, apples, juicy type fruit. Don't give much, just as he eats it then you can put another small piece in.

Twigs and small pieces of wood are good to chew on.

Don't give him salted nuts, especially with no water bottle! Salt makes you thirsty and bunches of salt is not good for him.

They are pretty hardy little guys, keep him fed, watered, clean and dry, and contained... you will be fine until the cage comes!

Best of luck with your new little guy!

  3. he sould be fine if you just pay atenten to him

  4. A fish tank or a plastic storage tote! Also toilet paper rolls and papertowel rolls are fun for them to play with

  5. Better put him in something that he can't chew through. It may take him a couple of days but he'll escape that basket.

  6. Go back in time and think it through- go 'huh, I don't have a cage, maybe I should WAIT to get the hamster'.

    Not hard.

  7. Well don't put it in a box!!! lol. Find some hard plastic container or a pot, i know that sounds weird but still.

  8. o.o;;

    what you're doing seems fine.

    don't worry too much.

they're supposed to live in the wild anyway.

  9. DO NOT DO what the one guy said about the plastic container, hamsters bite on there cages including boxes which is ok for them to bite on but plastic... ? no not so much. all you need left is make sure he can not get out but at the same time breath obviously. Hamsters come in boxed when you buy them so that should be fine.
