  1. If he is new you should let him get used to his cage surroundings. When I first got my hamster I wore some gloves for the first day or two whilst handling my hamster so

    1. She wouldn't bite me

    2. So she would get used to being handled

    3. So when she got scared and pooed a poo pellet, it wouldn't land on my hand.

I don't think you can really tame a hamster. Have you put cotton wool fluff in the corner of the cage? Hamsters will like to burrow into it and make that it's bed instead.

But when I first got mine she kept curling up and sleeping in the food bowl [awww]

  2. please keep in mind that hamsters are nocturnal hence the fact that he seems to sleep a lot..

it'll take some time and patience to tame him...he needs to learn to trust the giant hand that is trying to pick him up...lol

    here are some handy tips:

a wonderful tip i learnt from someone who breeds hamsters and works in a petstore is to rub some of the hamsters bedding/sawdust on your hands before picking him up...this will get his smell on your hands and he'll feel less threatened.

    good luck!

EDIT: they do sometimes like sleeping in their tubes rather than their beds...lol...it's a hamster thing, just leave him be...lol

  3. I have attached the guide to taming hamsters. Hope it helps you with your hamster.

    Guide to taming hamsters -

Taming your hamster can be a long process, don't expect your hamster to suddenly like be handled over night. It can take weeks or even months depending on the hamster. Here the the steps to handling a hamster -

STEP 1 - When you first get your hamster leave it alone for the first 2 - 3 days to let it get used to it's new cage and surroundings. If you pick him up on the first day itself, he will definitely bite you since you are a stranger to him.

STEP 2 - Once the hammy seems comfortable in his new cage, start talking to him softly and hang around his cage enough for him to get used to your voice and smell. After this time feed your hamster some treats from your hand so he get used to seeing your hand. This might take a few days to happen but be patient. If you feel that the hamster still bites you, you can use gloves initially.

PRECAUTION - always interact with the hamster only when he is active. If you touch him or disturb him when he is sleeping, he can get angry and bite viciously.

STEP 3 - Once your hamster seems confident with taking treats out of your hand you can try to start handling your hamster. Before you handle your hamster make sure you have washed your hands well. Hamsters have a strong sense of smell. If they smell something on your hand they may mistake it for food and decide to bite!

Get a cup or something similar and place it into the hamster's cage. He should come to investigate and crawl inside. Take the hamster and cup out of the cage and let him walk out onto your hand. While you do this make sure you're sat down or sat close to the floor incase your hamster decides to jump. Let him walk from hand to hand. Be careful you don't grab or wrap your hands around your hamster until he is fully tame as this may scare him and he will jump out of your hand.

STEP 4 - Once your hamster is more confident with you, you can start to pick up your hamster straight from it's cage. Just make sure your hamster is aware that you are there, if not you may suddenly scare the hamster and it may turn around and bite you.

Best way to hold hamsters is to make them climb into one hand and cupping the other hand softly over the body so that his head pokes out from the gap between your two hands. Remember, do not apply any pressure on his body, he will get scared and snap at you.

And regarding his sleeping in the tubes, I don't think that is anything to worry about. Probably he just feels secure there since he is new to your home and is scared of the new place. Hamsters change their sleeping places often so he might soon change to another more comfortable place once he gets used to the cage and his surroundings. His scared behavior is the reason he is not allowing you to hold him too. Once he gets used to your scent and sound and trusts you, he would be more than happy to get into your hands.

  4. he is scared of you. they are a prey animal in the wild so they are natually really skiddish.

you tame him by gentle holding, and letting him get to know you.

  5. well hamsters cant really be tamed they just got to get used to there surroundings and stuff and my hamsters sleeps in the tubes to its just cuz that were there comfortable. and they sometimes dont let you hold them if you have the smell of food on ur hands or if u have the sent of a different hamster.

  6. Hamsters are generally very skittish when you first get them.  I would say it is their normal fight/flight instinct.

All you need to do is handle the hamster frequently.  Take him out the cage often but for short times and then gradually extend the time periods.  The hamster should get used to you handling him eventually and realise that no harm will come to him.

Also for sleeping in his tubes.....there is nothing really you can do...he just likes sleeping there....but if you are worried I would suggest blocking the tube off untill you have got him reasonably tame.  Maybe he is sleeping in there due to nerves.

    Good luck.
