I just got a job with Amtrak as a conductor, Is this a government job? And Is this a good job to have?

amtrak employment is not considered a government job in the sense of Civil Service exams, steps, grades and pay, etc.  working for amtrak does not automatically allow you to change to other things like the Post Office, government offices, etc.

however, when you travel, many hotels will consider amtrak a government entity and give you government rates on hotel rooms. usually these are cheaper than business rates, but not always, so you should compare prices when calling.

amtrak is established as a corporation, in the same sense that the Postal Service or Public Broadcasting Service is a corporation now.  however, they are completely owned by the US Government.

but these types of jobs are different than working for the Congress, GSA, IRS, etc etc.

amtrak is one of those railroads that the goverment has controll over.  it must be if you applied for it and got it.

Not government, but good. Congratulations. Obviously you will undergo training for a while. Pick the brains of the "old heads" and learn from 'em. Don't just "memorize" the rule book, know it inside out. Each of those rules is to make sure you and everyone else goes home alive and with the same body parts they showed up with. Amtrak is not a government entity, therefore you are not in a government job. But, the job sounds great! Amtrak is a large company and has many services to offer. Perhaps you can get a promotion later to whatever line you want to travel on!

If the pay is good, and you have decent benfits, it soundslike a great job.

Amtrak is not a government job but in a sense it is.

The corporation that operates Amtrak is solely owned by the government.

You will be paying into the railroad retirement system which is much better and more solvent than social security. You wil be paying at a higher rate than social security each month but your return on retirement will be well worth it.

Yes those are good jobs and much sought after.

Personally, I feel the future looks very bright for amtrak although it is dependent on funding from the government.
