  1. shift at about 5-thousand minimum.

  2. it boils down to, do you need the power or not. generally you should be able to keep it under 5k. and its in the feel of the bike.  just try shifting up at a lower RPM than you have been, and pay attention to the gauges, you can feel it too. more often than not the bike can handle pretty low rpms once you get off the line.

  3. No.  Pay attention to your tachometer, that tells you your engine rpm, immediately. Its that round thing on the left.

If you lug the engine it will show a very low rpm, try to keep it at a minimum of 2000 rpm. (and do not exceed the red line when accelerating).

If you want max acceleration, shift at the redline, but do NOT exceed it in any gear. By the time you reach sixth it will be traveling at a most respectable velocity.  And the police will be stopping you to ask if you got your license in a cereal box.

  4. quit looking at the tach.  ride the bike and feel for the gear that it wants to be in.  If you rode a four wheeler then you should feel where it wants to be on your own.

  5. i shift at 10-13 grand
