I currently have DSL with my desktop, I might not keep my desktop, cuz my parents just died. Would I have to get a new service, wireless service now since I don't have a computer to use a router with?? I'm very confused. Also to go to a wifi hot spot do I need to initially have a hook up for it to work. It asks me for a name and password, but I don't know what to put there. Sorry a lot of questions. I am definitly not a computer person. Any info if this is comprehendable would be appreciated.

  1. First of all im sorry that ur parents died and secondly to have wireless internet u need a wireless card, they are 40-70 dollars. U can get them from bestbuy or circuit city. Once u buy a wireless card u just have to set up a connection. To do this u should call ur isp. (internet service provider) I hope this helps

  2. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.d...  $50.  Just follow the directions and your laptop should find the signal and connect wirelessly.  You don't need anything else.

  3. wifi is just wireless internet signals, so all you need to have wifi is to buy a wireless router (it makes wireless signals), you do not need to pay extra for wifi since all your doing is making your current internet signal that goes through cables go through the air

so you have to buy a wireless router to have wifi, and you need to make sure your laptop has a wireless lan card (so it can receive wifi signals) and you're ready to go, and no you do not need a desktop to have wifi, just a modem and a wireless router and that's it

  4. 1) You can get a wireless router for about $60.00, and it will enable you to use the laptop in and around your house/apartment. The router will talk to the DSL modem as if it were the desktop computer, so it is not necessary for you to keep the desktop.   You will need your login/account information in order to setup the wireless router to talk to your DSL provider, so make sure you have that written down somewhere.  Keep your wires, in case you have to hook up the laptop to the router temporarily to set it up or troubleshoot it.

    2) When your laptop is within range of a wifi hotspot it will try to connect to that network to get onto the internet.  The people that set up the wifi hotspot will usually have it ask for a username and password.  For paid wifi hotsports you may have to purchase access and at that time you'll be given a username and password.  If it is supposed to be free (i.e. starbucks), just ask the clerks behind the counter what username and password you should be using.
