  1. It depends on what kinds of components you want to hook up to your set (i.e. satellite, cable, dvd player (regular, upconvert, blu-ray or hd-dvd). Also, what kind of set is it and what inputs does it have. HDMI, Component, S-video, or composite (red, white for sound an yellow for video).  And does your set accept NTSC/ATSC/QAM signals from coaxial cable, the ones used for cable tv?

IF you have satellite or cable, use an HDMI (best) or Component cable (2nd best).  Same goes with your dvd player depending on if it has the outputs to accommodate.  This will give you the best picture quality and allow you to take advantage of the HD programming if you subscribe to it.

IF your set has an ATSC or QAM filter you can just hook the coaxial cable to receive cable viewing and it will let you view digital programming as well as let you watch HD channels if you subscribe.  But not Pay per view channels, from what I understand.  Your set has to have a slot for a cable or satellite card to receive those signals.

If you have a blu-ray or HD DVD, HDMI is the way to go for full HD (1080p) viewing.
