you don't "need" a traction pad.  board should have come with fins.

Wax, Legrope and Fins are what you have to have to surf.

Traction Pad (deck grip) is optional, you do not "have" to use one. Just remember to wax that part of the board.

You need a surf leash- this goes on your ankle. You need to wax the deck of the board. And make surf your board has fins.
