He's 7 weeks old. He is adorable. He follows me around everywhere, a jingle of my keys and he'll come running to me. He wants to be around me every second. I get no peace, BUT I'm not complaining.

My concern is that all he does is eat, sleep, and use the litterbox, he plays occassionally for about 2-3 hours then wants to be fed again, then back to sleep he goes. Is this normal behavior?

He is a rescue kitten, his owner abandoned him, his two brothers, and his mother. I did manage to find homes for all of them.

At what age should I get him neutered? What should he be eating? (It seems that he has trouble eating dry kitten food..so I mix it half and half with canned cat food). He has diahreah often is this because of the canned cat food?

We go to the vet on in two weeks for shots and full checkup. What should I talk to the vet about?

What are some good toys for him?

  1. At this age, he's still a BABY.  He's going to sleep a lot!  Eating and sleeping are what they do.  Diarrhea can be caused from too much wet food.  He needs to be eating KITTEN food....either dry or wet, or mixture...but KITTEN FOOD nonetheless.

Get him some soft rubber, or flannel, toys to toss around.  I made a "tunnel" out of 5-6 two liter coke bottles for my kittens to play in.  I cut the tops and bottoms off, taped the raw edges, then taped those same edges together to make the tunnel.  They LOVED it.  I'd toss a small ball through it, and they'd chase it.  Sometimes the kittens would sleep inside the tunnel.

Another fun toy is.......a fly swatter!  Sit on the floor, "swish" the fly swatter from side to side across the floor, and the kitten will chase it back and forth!  As the kitten gets better (older), you can make the fly swatter go up / around backwards, and the kitten will do a flip in the air!

Of course, this means that YOU play with him!

    Good luck........ENJOY!!

  2. Wait till he's about 6 months to get him neutered

You should get a toy mouse on a long string they sell it at stores you can fling it around and he will paw after it

  3. He's just a baby so what you have is equal to a year old baby.

I would get moist and dry baby food, since his teeth are very tiny and still baby teeth.

I find that normal things are better for them to play with, like an old sock tied in the middle, shoe strings, pieces of paper crumpled up or even paper bags.  It depends, as each like different things.

The vet will probably suggest a good book for cat ownership and cats can be fixed between 5-6 months old.

BTW; good for you rescuing all those cats\kittens.  What a great person you are!

And enjoy them while they're young..  LOL; I personally like them when they're full grown and can be great companions.

    Good luck.

  4. His eating/sleeping/playing behavior is nomal for a kitten his age.  He should be mostly on wet food at this age.  Don't give him cows milk as this will cause diareah.  As for toys, find ones that don't have anything that can be chewed off and choked on.  Play with him often but only with toys, not with your hands, so as to teach him that hands are for playing and cuddling, not biting.

  5. Oh, he sounds like the perfect kitty!

Well, most cats, even as adults, spend a good deal of their time eating and sleeping.  They sleep more than we do!

Your kitten is still a baby, so he will sleep more, and wake up when he gets hungry... just like a human baby.  So, he sounds normal.

The diarrhea could be caused by his little body trying to digest the solid food.  It means he might not be getting the vitamins he needs from the food and he could get dehydrated.  I would suggest you call the place you adopted him from and ask about what to feed him.  You could also call the vet now, even though you do not have an appointment for a couple weeks. Yes, the solid food could be causing the diarrhea. Milk could also cause diarrhea.  Most pet shops have liquid kitty formula and soft kitten food.

When you go to the vet, ask about neutering (all vets have different opinions on what is the best time), how to prevent fleas, when to give the cat de-wormer (just a pill or drops), and signs you should look for to tell if the cat is sick.

Good luck and have lots of fun with your kitty!

  6. His behavior sounds pretty normal to me.  When my cat was young I moistened her food a little with soft food or milk (even though they really shouldn't have milk).  She couldn't eat it otherwise.  My cats always love those toys with feathers on a stick or balls with bells in them.  As far as neutering, talk to your vet.  Usually it is done at about 6 months but some do it earlier.

  7. The diarrhea could be from worms.  I think the mixed cat food is probably a good idea, but avoid the milk which tends to give them diarrhea more.  You might want to call the vet about the diarrhea to see if they want him to come in earlier, and ask if they want a stool sample.

Our most recent kitty baby loved the ringy dingies from a gallon of milk.  =)  They like the little mousies and kitty balls too.

  8. get him a cat post or he'll tair every thing
