  1. i think that picture is just for show.  with orchids, they are very picky! you can't give them too much light or too much water.

i could never keep them alive, they always die on me.  good luck!

  2. What is it potted in now?  Usually orchids are potted in bark chip mix that has charcoal in it...you can buy special orchid mix like this at Walmart or a garden center.  They like to have moisture, but NOT sit in water. An east facing window is ideal.  I have mine is a south window, and they do OK there too.  Watering is usually the thing that will kill an orchid...usually overwatering.  That is why misting is often done.  Also, they do not need much fertilizer, so only do that a couple times a year.  Also, if you do have success, be sure to repot it every couple years, they outgrow their pots and the bark mixes break down and rot, causing poor drainage and rot of the roots.

  4. Orchids don't like wet feet.  I've had several and found the best way was to keep them in partial shade and a light misting of water every other day.  I've seen many orchids grown in cement pots with rocks/volcanic cinder as the growing medium.  Check if there's an orchid club in your area since they'll have the best info for your area - climate or light needs for example.  Growing orchids in Hawaii (where I live) is probably vastly different from growing orchids in say, Montana.

  5. It doesn't need soil at all. They love the  dry shell of the coconut

I used to attach them to a palm tree or orange tree with a ripped piece of a stocking. Go to a nursery and find a log to attach it then put a mixture of orchid fertilizer and water on a bottle  and spay it once a day. They are kind of fragile so don't get upset if you first one dies. I know this sounds crazy.

Orquidea means Orchid in Spanish. I love them!!!!!

  6. yes you should
