I think just about everything out there is water based besides the water proof stuff.

Mabelline carries a lot of mascara products that are gentle on the eye for contact lense wearers. Though most mascaras will tell you on the back of the packaging  if they're safe to use for contacts. I wear contacts too and I have never had a problem with mascara irritation. I use different brands and different kinds of mascara for different looks and they work just fine. You should be safe with pretty much any eye makeup just as long as you don't  get the makeup in your eye. So when applying your mascara do it very gently and keep the brush on the exterior of the lashes and be very precise and take your time.
