With the astigmatism I have, when I wear the glasses and look at a piece of paper or a calander or etc., I see a trapeziod shape instead a of a rectangle or square. Anybody out there have or had this problem and if so, how long does it take for it to go away? I don't like wearing the glasses because of the shape.

  1. Yeah if you're a first time eyeglass wearer you will definitely need to get used to them.  Your brain is used to seeing crooked and it'll take time to adapt.  If it takes more than a week though I would say that your doctor possibly gave you too much astigmatism at one time though.  There's 2 ways to evaluate your Rx as a doctor.  Subjectively and Objectively.  Your refraction may show that you could use a large amount of astigmatism but very often they won't give you the full amount right away because they know you don't "need" it to see clearly and it can take a very long time to get used to if it's a big jump.  If you have 2.00D of astigmatism for example (which is quite high) and haven't worn glasses before it is likely you'll be very disoriented for possibly quite a while so they'll give you maybe somewhere between 1.00 and 2.00D so you don't fall on your face when you walk out the door.  If it doesn't get almost completely better within 2 weeks I would tell him you're not getting used to it.

  2. If what you're seeing is clear but looks distorted, you should be fine. You should adjust to them shortly. I remember something similar happening to me when I first got glasses where I see the ground looking bumpy and as if there were steps but in reality, just flat ground. I was walking weirdly. This, however, stopped in around half an hour.

You will experience this if you're either wearing them for the very first time or changed prescriptions.

Hope this helps and good luck!

  3. Hey, bud! Your brain has been telling you what the way to see without your glasses is the normal way things are. With the new RX your brain does not recognize what it is seeing and thinks it is weird. That is all. It will calm down and you will be fine once your brain understand that your eye actually sees better with the right signals! If it does not calm down in a week, call your doctor! I bet it settles down, though is you wear them . It sounds weird, but correcting for astigmatism takes some time to adapt! Good luck!

  4. I have astigmatism and I have that problem when I change my glasses prescription.  It's pretty common, from what I hear.  Things look wavy and a bit out of proportion for me usually for about a day, and then it goes away.  I think the longest it's ever lasted for me was three days.
