I just got hired as a car salesman for Toyota. A friend of mine did a search on edmunds.com and they said that the life expectancy of a Toyota car sales man is seven months. WHY? Maybe there is someone out there who is a Toyota Salesman, and you can tell me what it is like to work for Toyota.

  1. It's not unique to Toyota or any other brand, but car salespeople don't last very long because they find out they are not cut out for car sales. Some people have it, most don't.

To be a successful, one must be street smart, business smart, people smart, extremely aggressive, very outgoing, personable, hard working, competitive, and willing to stretch the bounds of ethics and honesty. One also has to have patience and determination because it takes time to be successful. These are things you either have or don't have; they are not learned or acquired on the job.

  2. i agree, streetsmarts is #1 on the list. being from NYC and living in south florida . most succesfull salesmen down here are from NYC, or from latin america,Toyotas are Excellent vehicles stress reliability and high resale you cant go wrong and you wont be lying... i learned NOT to follow all of edmons advice....lol  by the way what state are you in?

    good luck!

  3. has nothing to do with the brand.  Salespeople in general are prone to move from spot to spot in the car business.  They are always looking for that greener grass.  Trust me, its all the same color.

I have seen salespeople blast out of a place after 2 weeks, then blast out of the next place 2 weeks later.

Rest assured, the car business is like boot camp for sales.  Its a tough career to get established in.  But if you stay in one place, LISTEN 10x more than you TALK, and be a study of people, habits, and salesmanship, you CAN make a good living.  And to head off the inevitable posts - you can do it all with honesty, integrity, and standards.

And believe this:  If you can stay in one place for more than a year, you will build a strong clientele of repeat and referral customers.  Hop around, and you will be just another guy on the line, hopnig for some greener grass
