I just got my first musical Instrument, a trumpet. What are some ways I can practice?

Go some place where no one will mind.  Blow that beauty in the woods if you have a dog.  The word play.  Play with it to get to know what you can do naturally.  Loud too.  Don't let anyone fool ya, trumpet was used as long distance communications.  Have fun, play Fox-hunter.

go to the music store a download a musicware program. They will teach you step by step on what you have to do to learn the notes and stuff, and they have practice songs which really come in handy.

Start by getting a basic music book and learning all of the finger positions. Also, practice making the "buzz" sound into your mouth piece. Gradually you can work up to doing basic scales. Have fun and good  luck!
