No.  Most banks only cash checks for their own customers.  The only exception, and it's an important one, is that you may take the check to the institution it is drawn from (look for the bank or credit union's name on the face of the check.)  Your best bet is to start up a no fee checking account with a local bank or credit union and establish a relationship.  It can come in handy when it's time to cash checks, pay bills, and get loans.

you can only go to the bank that is on the check. if the bank is out of state you would have to go to a check cashing place unless you have a bank account.
