  1. you shave your entire body with a razor. you have to do this because your hair makes you go just a little bit slower.. and you're trying to be fast. you can shave with just a regular shaving razor that you can buy anywhere.

  2. as a swimmer, you need to shave your pits and 'lady areas' pretty often.

but hair slows you down in the water, drag. so sometimes before meets everyone will shave their legs. or for big meets, most of the hair on your body.

  3. Shave down means you shave your arms and legs. Some people will shave their back, but the hair is so thin there that it does not make a difference and it may make back hair thicker if you begin shaving it! You do not have to do your whole body! And a razor works the best!

  4. The best way to shave is with a razor, i prefer putting on shaving cream before you start shaving so that it doesn't sting after. The most important part to shave is the legs, sometimes the guys shave their heads when it is a really big competition or they wear head caps. You should also shave your armpits. But why would your coach be asking you to shave already if you just got on the team. Usually you're only supposed to shave for big meets.

  5. You just got on a swim team the the coach is already telling you to 'shave down'?

I'd say it's time to switch teams. A competent coach would never:

1.) have novice swimmers shave down

    and

2.) have you shave down after 'just getting on the team'

Swimmers shave down for Championship meets. If they shaved for every meet then the main effect of the shave down would be compromised.

Swimmers shave down for two reasons:

    1) Hair on the body presents drag when the swimmer enters the water. Swimmers shave everything outside their suits. Some even shave their heads (including eye brows) for championship meets. Others wear swim caps and only shave arms, legs, arm pits, chest, and back.

    and (more importantly)

2.) to get a better 'feeling' on the water. This feeling is something that's difficult to describe to someone who hasn't done this before. But it makes the swimmer feel like they're 'slicing' through the water and it 'feels fast'. This is a psychological advantage when one shaves.

It's important to note that it's unnecessary to shave as much with the new full body suits since they cover more of the body and actually prevents water drag.

    How do you shave?:

1.) First 'clip' down with electric shears. If you don't then the razor is going to 'clog' up very quickly.

2.) Use shaving cream and a safety razor, just like your dads. You'll need help with your back. I always had my mother do that, in the tub, because I once had a teammate do it for me at Nationals and I can't tell you how many cuts I had.

Good question ... but I'd question why your coach is telling you to shave down so soon.

    Good luck.

    Enjoy!
