  1. Take a good book, tell the judge your excuse.

  2. I am not sure how the laws and procedure in Texas work.  However, if you have final exams during the time you would be expected to put in jury duty,  your situation should definitely  be cause for exoneration from it.

Usually the people chosen for jury duty have to be screened down to about 12 in number, so you would have to attend an initial court session where you are asked some questions about your attitude.  The actual trial might begin immediately after.

You probably would get paid.  The pay often is about minimum wage is you are not currently holding a job.  I am not sure what someone on a high income would be paid.  Possibly this person would get a portion of his/her regular salary.

It is nothing to worry about.  If the jury duty begins while your exams are on, you should try to get out of it by appealing it.  I do not think it would be a difficult process at all.

I guess under other circumstances, being part of a jury when asked, would be considered as a conscientious or moral duty in the interest of justice.

  3. I don't know how it works for you, but here in Texas being a college student is reason to get out of jury duty.

On the back of the summons slip there was something to fill out where you list your reason on why you cannot attend. I would presume it would be similar to you.

  4. Make a phone call and let them know about your finals and make an offer to provide proof of your claim.

I did this when I had a business trip to make and couldn't be changed. I was immediately released from duty after offering to make it up at a later time.

Yes, the trip was legit and gave them the phone number of my boss to verify.

  5. Most states allow you to postpone your jury duty. Finals will allow you to reschedule jury duty. Depending on the state you will get paid (here it is $12 per day). Different states use different systems. My wife was called years ago but she had never voted (she was a green card holder at the time) needless to say she didn't have to go.

  6. Just ask to postpone it (by usually filling at the form that you receive with your jury notice, or calling the phone number listed or even now just going on to the courts website and filling out the online form).

Different states and areas have different ways of calling you up for jury. It's not necessarily because you are registered to vote. Some places report it's because you have a utility turned on in your name.

The times I have been called up for jury duty they never actually called our group up. We got pushed back twice and after that they canceled our whole group number. No big deal. But do it when you can as I'm sure it'll be a fun and rewarding experience. :)

  7. Even if you are not registered to vote, you can still be called as a juror.

On the form you return, there is usually a place you can request to be called later or some other thing for "hardship" reasons.  State college finals.

  8. You need to call the number on the summons and refer to the docket number, in all likely hood you will not be called. Have you looked at the date of the trial? Ca. usually doesn't send jury notices out that close to a trial. I'm in Ca. been called to jury 7 times and it was always a few weeks before the trial.

Are you sure you read the summons date right? The case number is up in the right hand corner , it will tell you to call the court on a given date to see if you will need to appear, call that number listen to the instructions, and then key in the information they ask for with the telephone key pad.

Good luck on your finals. And if your jury date is after finals, go for it, it is an experience you will remember all your life.
