  1. Basically, it'll be wherever the Navy needs you.  But I'd bet on a squadron that deploys on a carrier or a part of a carrier's ship's company.  There's also some amphibious ships to which you could possibly be assigned.

And, yes, you will probably at some point in your career (most likely sooner than later) you'll be assigned to both.

I'm not even an Aviation rating and I've been assigned to two squadrons and a carrier (ABRAHAM LINCOLN) in my 14 years of service.

Good luck to you and thanks for your decision to GO NAVY! Welcome Aboard!

  2. As an AO, you will be loading aircraft with munitions/ ordnance/ weapons and maintaining those relevant systems.

Depends on the bird that you work on:  If you work on Carrier capable aircraft, you will most likely (95% or better) be getting on a ship.

If you have questions about your JOB field - there is a Moderated Yahoo group for AOs.

  3. I would think an aircraft carrier. That or an air station somewhere. Good Luck!

  4. My son in law is an aviation ordnanceman.  He spends all of his time either on shore duty or on a ship.  Don't recall him ever talking about flying.  An ordnanceman is the fellow who hangs the bombs/ordnance on the wings of the airplanes.  He isn't the man who drops them, that would be the pilot, a commissioned officer.  And at the moment believe it or not my son in law and family are stationed in the California desert!  Good luck to you.

  5. It don't matter your government property now!!!! LOL Good Luck with all that see you on the news!!

  6. Once you get more rank than you will have more of a choice, but you will go where they need you .

  7. I just met an AO2 who left active duty and affiliated with the reserves.  He spent much of his enlistment assigned to a P-3 squadron; several deployments but none on ships.  I have known AOs and ETs assigned to P-3 squadrons who have never been on ships; I also knew an AMS2 who was part of a EA-6 squadron that rotated from carrier to carrier.  It all depends on the type of squadron you get assigned to.

  8. If you stay in the Navy long enough, you'll have the opportunity to serve on both aircraft carriers as part of the ship's crew and in the squadrons they employ. Having served in both myself, I preferred being part of ship's company (crew) rather than the squadrons. Of course, I was originally a Weapons Technician (WT) who converted to Aviation Ordnanceman (AO) later in my career, so ships company felt more at home for me. You're actually very lucky, ...you've gotten into one of the best rates in the Navy as an AO. Make the most of it, you can go a long way.

  9. My Son [with emphises]If I may call you this.I thank you from the bottom of my heart for the patriotic thing which you have chosen to do even with all the negitive c**p the news media is spreading around. You have chosen a great path in life. One that may put you in harms way. Even knowing this you push on and do what your heart and mind tell it to do.I lost my Son to an impending situation and I also have memories of a conflict that was before your time. That I am sure you have heard of it a time or two. I am an Army Ranger viet nam vet. Delta Things have change some since my time, but you; if taken with an open mind will have all the opportunitys and stations avalible to you provided you perform to thier expectations. And yes the places you will go will make you prouder than any thing you have done up untill this point.Keep it straight watch others around you lean on them when needed as they will lean on you.PS in the desert Airforce personell are not allowed to tell family members they are installing destructive devices into the compartment of an air plane some call a Stelth. Luck too you. And PS folks who tell you to be safe, hmmmm tell them if you wanted to be safe all the time you would stay home at mom and dads and play videgames and watch cnn. Luck too you. Dave
