I just graduated with a B.A. in print journalism. Should I go for my Master's?

I know I want to be in the media and I also have an Associate's Degree in Radio/TV Broadcasting. Obviously, a Master's degree would look good on a resume but how necessary would it be? Answers from people with journalism degrees would be appreciated.

  1. In a highly competitive career such as journalism, it could be the difference in working, or being unemployed.

    I would go after it.

  2. I always got the impression that those who went after a Masters in journalism were more interested in teaching as a career. In practical terms, newspapers and magazines were always more interested in how you write and report, rather than your resume. The sooner you start writing, the better.

Can't say my college background has come up much very often. More education is never a bad thing, but you have to match it with your goals.

  3. If your finances allow it, getting it right away while your study habits are fresh isn't a bad idea.  Ask your school's job placement office for their success rates for people with both the Bachelor's and the Master's- there may not be much difference.
