I just graduated with a BS in Biology. What next?

Question

I'm interested in research, maybe medical research. I love school/learning and i am all for getting my masters or doctorate. However, it looks like masters/doctorate programs are hard to get into. I'd like to start out by getting a job making decent money so I can move out of my parents house and live on my own.

Any ideas about what job titles I should pursue that will give me experience to eventually get deep into people that will one day help millions of people? Should I be feeling around to see what specialty I am most interested in;micro, macro, bio-chem, etc? Hopefully someone on here is or has been in my shoes.

I can't help you get a job, but shame on your college for not helping you find what you are looking for. You spent lots of money there, so ask them for some help..

For a quick job, try being a health inspector for your city. They require a science degree. But as for research, look at some companies that deal with it. Talk to some human resources and ask what they want. Maybe intern, so you can get some experience.

Getting into grad school isn't that difficult.  The biggest thing to know is that you apply to the faculty member you want to work with.  Don't just send a general application to the graduate school because you'll likely never hear back.  Find someone who is doing research you're interested in, read their work, and contact them directly.  If they are looking for grad students and you convince them that you're good, then you're in.

But, if you really do want to delay grad school (which isn't always a bad idea), I would suggest looking at lab and field technician jobs.  These are jobs where you essentially are responsible for making field gear, running samples, doing data collection for the researcher.  This will give you experience with methods, what it's like to be a scientist, and different types of research.  It will also provide you with a good reference if you do a good job.
