I just had a question about people honking cars?

what exactly would it mean when people honk their horns?

one time i got wolf whistled and that made me laugh, but what exactly would it mean? please, give me more than one side, because im sure it's not for all the same reason whatever reason that may be.

yeah i always wondered that too. haha. sometimes if im walking i get honked at and im all WTF?! did i do something wrong. and one day i was walking with my brother and we got a honk, and i was talking to him about it, and he said hes never been honked at and that they were probly honking at me...so i think the people above are right.

and also to the person that said animals dont know what a horn is...........obviously an animal doesnt think--wow that loud and obnoxious sound is coming from some object called a horn and the human creating that sound at me must want me to get out of the way, therefore i will.

it goes more like this.

animal hears loud noise and runs. thus saving it from impending doom. thank you horn!!

or in the case of my neighbors, "HEY, JIMMY!  IT'S 12 AM, SO I'M GOING TO WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORHOOD TO SAY HI TO YOU!"

Technically, and legally, one is only allowed to use the horn to "communicate" your presence to other traffic or people (i.e. bike riders who don't know you're approaching them from the rear)... or in circumstances of warning of danger.

Car horns are not to be used as means of "polite social exchange" nor for honking at animals, since they are unable to understand what a horn IS.

Well, you're supposed to honk your horn only to alert other drivers, but sometimes dumb guys honk their horns at girls to get their attention.  I don't know why either.  Am I supposed to drop what I'm doing and hop in your car because you honked?  Or am I supposed to be impressed because you can drive and know how to press the area in the center of your steering wheel?
