I went today and they did the test.

I am so nervous I'm scared to death that I have it and my baby is in danger. It runs in my family.

So my question is: If i fail the test, when will I have to go back for the 2 hour test? Right away or at my next appointment?

Also If I am... could it have been hurting my baby this whole time? I don't really understand it all this is my first.

  1. If you fail the 1 hr test they will send you for the 3 hr test within a couple of days and if you do have GD they will show you how to adjust your eating habits (more protein less carbs) and tell you to make sure to get about 30 minutes of exercise at least a day (can be just taking a walk) and then they will have you monitor yourself for a few days and decide if you need medicine or not.

  2. I had this, and I was scared to death like you.  I went for my 2 hour test a few days after they got the results back from the first test.  You have to go in fasting, and the two hour test is awful.  Also, you can't leave the office during the two hour test, so be sure to bring a book or something.  (I thought I would be able to leave and come back)  No, it hasn't been hurting your baby this whole time if you have it, because you don't develop it until later on in your pregnancy.  They will scare you silly by telling you the dangers of GD to the baby, and I am sure there is some sort of danger, but as long as you stick to the diet if you do end up having GD and take your insulin if it can't be controlled by diet alone your baby will be fine.  My baby was born at 34w6d (because of another issue, not GD), and he weighed 6lb.12oz.  So, the biggest thing is they are bigger babies.  I can only imagine how much he would have weighed if he would have been born at 40 weeks.  They will check the baby's blood sugar as soon as it is born, and it will more than likely be normal.  I will pray that you don't have it, but if you do please know that it is very common and a lot of women have it, and their babies are just fine.  Good luck!

  3. Don't stress that does more damage then the GD!!! Just cause it runs in the family doesn't mean you'll have it so sleep easy.

  4. ok i have gestational diebetes and heres what i know. 1st of all many people fail the one hour test. if you fail it you will have to go back and take a 3 hr test. if people in your fam have diabetes you are at a higher risk, but you still might not have it. do not worry to much cuz stress affects the way your body digests the foods you eat. until you find out, if your really worried, just try to eat healthy, and get some exersize. like a 20- 30 min walk each day.  if you do have it, you will have to check your sugar two hrs after you eat each meal, your dr  will give you a diet plan that limits cabs, and probably cuts out sweets completely:(  just so you know, i have three sisters who have kids who never had this. and i do. my dad had type 2 diebetes. i dont think i got it because of heredity. oh and i dont want to be crass, but i am not by any means unhealthy, i was in great shape b4 i got pregnant  and i ate healthy and everything. so if you do get it do not blame youself.

  5. no it wont hurt your baby. normally what happens it you either have a larger baby or a smaller baby then average size. i had it with my last two babies. they will call you as soon as they know if you do have it if not they tell you on your next appt. your baby is not in danger so relax. you take a 4 hour test not 2 and they make that normally within the next couple of days.
