  1. We look for different things in different people.  CD is right about clotting and electrolytes and blood count.  We may also look at your EKG if you are at risk for heart disease, at blood glucose if you are diabetic, and dozens of other things if you have other medical issues.

We treat each patient individually, so what we look for in YOU will be different than what we look for in other patients.

The goal is to have you in the best shape possible before surgery, and to know about any issues that may cause problems with the surgery or anesthesia.  (We're all about safety in anesthesia!)

  2. basically we are looking for any unexpected abnormalities (such as liver function problems, clotting problems, kidney issues)  and to get a to establish a baseline before surgery.

everyone runs a bit different so it is a good idea to have a starting point.

  3. Before you have any surgery, lab tests are done in order to make sure your blood will clot adequately/ that you have enough platelets, check your white blood cell count to ensure that it's okay and to look for any other metabolic abnormalities which will increase the risk of Anesthesia, e.g. Potassium level.
