I just heard you're six times more likely to get mugged in London than New York City. Why is this?

I wasn't thinking about the weapon factor, but I do think a New Yorker is more likely to fight back thus scaring off some thugs.

  1. Who says a New Yorker is more likely to fight back?

London is more than a city, I think. You've got it made from several parts, and some parts, like South London, are typically known to be very concentrated with the knife crime population, and so obviously those areas are associated with mugging, so those /aren't/ the main tourist attractions, whereas when I went to NYC I found that I went almost everywhere and there was A LOT to do, whereas London is more specific. So it's almost like you've got one part of London for tourists, but all the rest of London has the dangerous streets, the council blocks, the alleyways. England's theft and attack rates are escalating and it's pretty scary. I even made my husband relocate his job from London because it was freaking me out.

    I don't even know what I said there. >.<

Besides, London's a more expensive city, isn't it? Maybe it's just an English thing...

  2. London is not more expensive than New York, both are ranked as two of the most expensive cities in the world.

Every single city is going to have its' downsides, its' crime. London and New York are no different.

Okay, there are people in London in that carry knives, but that is only a small percentage.

And America allows citizens to have guns.. Which England does not, and often guns do alot more damage than knives.

I do not think you are more likely to get mugged in London than in NY.

Wherever you go there's going to be a chance of it.. Both are massive cities and have alot of crime.. either way, I don't think you can compare them on the basis of where people get mugged more. Even more I don't think you can compare them full stop. They're both incredible cities, which is much more important.

Always look on the bright side :)

  3. Because law-abiding citizens aren't allowed to carry concealed weapons, and criminals know they won't put up a fight.

  4. You should cite your source. I found an older article dated  4/10/2006

that says it comes down to "police on the beat".

" Recently total crime rates for London have been estimated at about seven times those of New York for a slightly smaller population and some authorities suggest these figures have been minimized. England and Wales are now accounted by some estimates as the most dangerous places for crime in the developed world.

New York and London have populations of 8 million and 7 million respectively and comparable police budgets, though New York has about 40 percent more police actually on the beat. British papers retail many incidents of British police, rather than preventing crime, being kept busy "celebrating diversity" and prosecuting politically incorrect remarks and behavior (large amounts of money and court time have been spent by the Crown Prosecution Service on cases of children who have made politically incorrect remarks in school playground fights, for instance)."

New York has had a very dramatic decrease in crime since it peaked in 1990. Mayor Gulliani has made some serious consulting money in places like Mexico City since he left office.

The top ten cities for violent crime rate in America are:

    Missouri St. Louis

    Michigan Detroit

    Tennessee Memphis

    California Oakland

    Maryland Baltimore

    Pennsylvania Philadelphia

    Georgia Atlanta

    Ohio Cleveland

    Tennessee Nashville
