  1. AVG 8.0 is a good  security suite (antivirus and antispyware) to use. Installing another security suite such as {Windows} Defender would not necessarily mean that your computer system would be afforded a formidable security, but rather it might slow down access to your programs and application, especially if both security applications' real-time scan are enabled.

Better stick to one and constantly update the definition files. For security: one antivirus (such as AVG 8.0) with real-time scan could  serve the purpose PLUS a number of anti-spyware such as Spybot S&D and SpywareBlaster. I recommend that you install: Spybot-Search & Destroy http://www.spybot.com/en/download/index.... or http://spybot.info/en/spybotsd/index.htm... and SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareb... These two (2) applications have proved their worth in spyware protection; and best of all they're both free and signature updated regularly. SpyBot S&D will delete spyware when found; while SpywareBlaster will block malware from being installed when you are online. You could have as many anti-spyware software as your computer can handle, but definitely stick to one antivirus application.

Incidentally, you have not specified which virus is still existing after an AVG scan. Please visit the following AVG site for utility/tools to remove those persistent virus which a regular AVG scan could not remove: http://www.grisoft.com/ww.about-viruses
