My husband and I and our 1 year old daughter just moved to the Gold Coast from the United States. I would really like to meet some women my age (30+) and some people that we can hang out with. I am also looking for exercise groups or other ways to meet people. We live just inside Surfer's Paradise. I don't have a car, so walking distance would be best. Anyone else out there in the same shoes? I am sure some Americans have moved out here recently...

  2. Go to the Playgroup Australia website for info on nearby playgroups. There are quite a few on the Gold Coast including at least one in Surfers itself.

Playgroups are not for profit groups run by mothers (some dads and grandparents too) under the auspices of PGA in local areas and cater for children from birth until kindergarten age. They usually meet once a week in a church hall or some other safe environment. A major benefit is that they provide an avenue for parents and caregivers of young children to get together over coffee and interact with other people in a similar situation to their own. Activities include Music and singing, imaginative play, outdoor and free play, art and craft activities and outings. Most playgroups own their own toys, painting equipment etc.

At ours, we used to 'take a plate' which is an Australian expression meaning that each mother takes a small plate of cake, biscuits or whatever to share and I imagine that they all still operate along similar lines.

I made lifelong friends at playgroup and used to really look forward to each week's get together. If you don't find kindred spirits at the first playgroup you attend, try another and I'm sure you'll make heaps of new contacts very quickly.
