Question:

I just moved from Massachusetts to California. Will my car insurance/accident history get transfered?

I have heard that Massachusetts insurance companies are typically independent of California insurance companies. As a consequence, California insurance companies wont have access to my records in Mass. This would mean that my old claims/history won't affect my new insurance policy in California. Can someone tell me if this true.

  1. today they all share info...

  2. It will get transferred. Your accident history and traffic violations are also recorded in the DMV files.

  3. have you informed thr company? if not get in touch with them and send detailed info about your moving into  a new place.

  4. The first statement is true, the companies run independently in each state.

The consequence doesn't follow, though. They still all subscribe to the Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange, and the  MVR records are shared.   So yes, your old claims history and drivng records will show.

  5. YES - car insurance/accident history is becoming more centralized every day.  Just like there are companies that specialize in credit information, there are companies that specialize in the insurance information industry.

Technically, it won't get " transfered ", it will instead be available from the net, where it has been already.

  6. You need to get insured in California - you can most likely use the same insurance company but would need to conform to CA laws of limits of liability PIP or whatever else might not be on your current policy.  It will also have to be adjusted to statistic information for CA resulting in higher or lower rates depending on the difference of statistics you had in MASS.

Every time you move you should inform your insurance company of the change of address, distance driven to work/school, etc so that you keep proper coverage for the new area and don't get cited for "insurance fraud" if the wrong information is not supplied to the comany.  Many insurance companies work through most states; talk to yours about these changes.

  7. Your history will follow you (ever hear of CLUE reports?).  But you must notify your insurer of the address change or obtain new coverage.

  8. Short answer: Yes it will.

    Also, a good resource is...

    Best of luck to you.

  9. I am not sure anymore but I know when I first moved out of MA my driving record did not follow me.  There are like 6 states in the country that didn't participate in reporting or allowing access to driving history.  I am not sure anymore though because all the previous answer say yes.  But in 2003 I moved and they were unaware of my 6 tickets from when I was 16-19!
