I just moved into a new apartment...how do I make the ice cube maker work?

The ice machine in the freezer has a bar on the side, i have tried it in both directions....what am i doing wrong? how do i turn it on?

The water supply may not be connected.  If you roll the fridge out, is there a water line connected at back?  People often buy an ice/water fridge but then realize later that no one has plumbed a shut-off valve to that location.

The bar needs to be in the down position. In the top of the ice maker are some cups, where the ice is made. Put your fingers in the cups and see if there's any water in them. It's possible the water to the refrigerator was shut off. There might be a valve behind the refrigerator, or under the sink with the water valve for the sink. Follow the water line at the back of the refrigerator to determine where it is.

Usually down is on, up is off for the bar on the ice makers. Check to be sure the unit is pushed all the way in. There's a plug in the back of the ice maker which has to plug in to the inside back wall of the freezer. It may be loose. If the fridge has a filter, it may be plugged and needing changed. Make sure the water is on to the ice maker water line. Other than that, I don't know. There's other stuff in the fridge which it could be, but I'm not that knowledgable to suggest anything there. Mine has some kind of valve or pump it goes through as it enters the fridge, but I'm not clear on how it works.

He's right about the water supply.

Look in the rear of the fridge.  If the water supply is there, you will see a copper or a plastic  tube running from the fridge to a water supply in the wall.

No tube, no water.

There is another possibility.  If the water line is connected then the line is probably frozen where the line enters the freezer and empties into the ice cube tray.  Remove enough from your freezer to get your hair dryer in to thaw out the line.  That happens to ours if we go away on vacation.
