I just moved to Santiago, Chile and some one has sent me an important airmail package which may be subject to?

import duties. If so, where will I have to go to pick up the package and/or pay the import duties?

  1. You should receive a piece of paper from whoever has your package giving you the information. Brace yourself for those import duties, sometimes they can be a little shocking.


  2. Okay now I just left Chile and had this same problem when I was there. First things first do you know what method of airmail the package was sent? I ask cuz global mail ( wether priority or express) sends you the package directly and if no one is there to sign for it then they leave a note. DHL however is a totally different story. They are supposed to contact you by phone which they won't and then they'll make a big stink about the duties.  Speaking of which those import duties are well beyond ridiculous. did you know that a $4 dollar pack of Newports (which they don't sell down there) will cost you an extra 27000 pesos in duties. and thats per pack not for the whole package!!! So 2 packs costs 54000 pesos. the average exchange for the U.S. dollar is only something like 450 pesos a dollar. you do the math... It wasn't worth it to me.
