  1. He's scared. Hamsters make a high pitched sound when they feel threatened.

Yes, he should be in a larger cage than a Crittertrail Mini.

The Crittertrail Two is the SMALLEST of the cages I would allow a hamster to live in. They need room, they need activities.

  2. Some baby hamsters do this when the are frightened, and only when you put your hand near them. Give him a couple of days to become accustomed to his new home, and become familiar with you and his new surroundings. Then you must start handling him, screeching or not, he will only do it for a minute or two, until he realises you mean him no harm. Then he will stop, and should be fine.

The cage will do for now, because he is small, but as he grows he will need a bigger cage than the mini crittertrail.

  3. it is normal

  4. Hamsters require time to get used to new surroundings and this could probably be the reason for his loud squealing since normally hammies squeal when they are angry.

Other possibilities that you can rule out are the following -

    1. Sometimes hammies can have mites in their fur and this could cause them to squeal too. Does your hammy scratches his skin excessively? That can indicate a possibility of mites. In that case, take him to a vet immediately and clean out his cage thoroughly with a disinfectant.

    2. The hamster could be sick. Best way to rule it out is to take him to a vet to rule out any sickness. A sick hamster can squeal when in a lot of pain.

    3. Is his bedding alright? Using a wrong type of bedding can cause irritation to the hammy. Use aspen shavings and supplement with untreated/unbleached toilet roll papers. Hammies love toilet roll papers and it is fun to watch them spread it all over their nest.

    4. Is the cage kept in an area that is prone to excessive drafts or temperatures? This could cause the hamster to squeal due to irritation.

Crittertrail mini is a small cage for the hamster and might limit its movements but cannot be the main reason for the squealing. If possible invest in a bigger and more spacious cage so that the hamster can explore the big spaces and be content.

If all the above four possibilities are ruled out, then most probably your hamster just needs the time to adjust to its new surroundings. Give him plenty of nutritious food and fresh water and try to handle him for atleast 5 minutes daily (if he bites, use gloves but make sure you handle him with lots of gentleness and love) so that he gets used to his surroundings and to your smell and starts trusting. Once the hammy is tamed, he would be your best friend for life!

  5. He's probably scared out of his wits xD Does he have a place to burrow or hide? If not try to find something he can hide in until he feels more comfortable :)

  6. well i have never known that to happen really b4 with a hamster but you have to remember it is now on its own with no others and is still a baby im guessing so it could be just missing its mother like the way baby guinea pigs behave wen they miss there mums. if your really worried about it though id take it to the vets as i had a chinese dwalf hamster b4 that sneezed a lot i took him to the vets to find out he was just like me ashmatic lol. now i got a different 1 as the other passed away after 4yrs.
