Oh, you must water them immediately.  The best way is to hold them in a bucket of water to keep them submerged and then turn them on so they can drink up the water.  Be sure you are using your bare hands to hold them under the water, wouldn't want to break any of the bulbs through rough handling.  Meeeeeeeerrrrrrrrry Christmassssssss.

Oh, by the way, don't pet the cat while you are watering the lights.
