just happens to be more money than other daycares around. So I'm thinking about having a yard sale so that whatever I make can go towards the tuition. Do you think it's proper to post signs saying that all proceeds are going to his cause? And is it proper to say something like please be considerate with the prices (as I have A LOT of things that are still in the box not even open yet). I'm desperate, I need extra cash for this daycare.

  1. It's absolutely fine to say what the money is going for.  You could even advertise it as a fundraiser.  This way people will realize that the profits you make are going to a specific cause, and items that are priced a bit more are more acceptable at a "fundraiser" versus a "yard sale."  I did a similar thing when raising money in high school for a study abroad program.  I don't see the difference in this.

On a side note:  Your county doesn't offer state run preschools for special kids.  I live in California and work for Special Schools and Services in a northern California county.  We offer preschool to kids 3 and up with special needs free of charge.  This also gives them a few more years to get adjusted to a school routine rather than a daycare routine.  Call your counties office of education and ask.  Your income shouldn't even be considered.

  2. You don't have to explain to people why you need the money for... Just set up the things and get the sale going.. no explanations required..

  3. There may be some legality of posting signs saying it is a fund raiser. I don't know the answer to that, but I wanted to make sure you are aware that Federal Law provides special education for preschool aged children.

You have enough to worry about without trying to scrape every last penny together for your son's care and education. If he is older than 3, then you really should call your county office of education and learn what services you may have available.

  4. I think it is completely appropriate to indicate what the funds will be going towards.  I might also suggest that you contact local support groups in your area as well as Rotary, Lions Club, etc.  If you share your son's story, you will be amazed at the generous hearts out there!  Our group offers some financial assistance to families in our area in situations like yours.  Check us out at http://www.valleysnafu.com.

  5. My son is also autistic and I know how much it can cost!  I think it's fine to say what the funds are going for.  You aren't asking for donations, you're informing people that the money they spend on items will be well used.  I wouldn't say anything about the prices.  Just say something like, "I really can't negotiate on these prices", when people try to negotiate. Good luck!!!!!

  6. it wouldn't offend me-

i have beenon the other end--going to garage sales lloking for things for children with disabilities--and people give me free stufff..

have you lopoked into SSI-supplemental security (from social security) for your son----there are family income limits

also register with teh division of developmental disabilities--they have different programs from respite care to grants

  8. I think you should put regular Yard Sale signs up then a sign up at the sale saying what the proceeds are for! Also have you son is there so people don't think you are lying. I know it sounds wrong but you can really milk the cash cow if you have your son there and just act sad while doing it! People can be really giving if they feel bad for you.
