I just rang the HR dept. for the hospital i had an interview for?

she said i have been shortlisted and they are waiting for my references,

1. will she tell the employer that i rang as i'm sure my keeness will be noted

2. how many people usually go on the shortlist??

CONGRATS you will most likely get the job.

They will keep things confidental as they can. But yet get enough information to help them choose.

I would say five to three people, and that is the max.

Your are probably doing well, the short list could be 2-3.  At this point in the interview they are looking for reasons to tell someone no....what I mean is, lets says they have 3 good people, they will check the references and hope they get a bad one and that will make their decision easier, they hear a bad reference and that person is off of the list.

If all of you do well, then it will come down to the one they like the best....

Lets hope that one guy had a boss that hated him because he found him and his wife on the copy machine during the office x-mas party going at it with the copier set to enlarge photo.

Maybe the other women you are up against sexually harassed the janitor named Julio, because she has always had a thing for guys with big brooms....

I think you are close to getting a job.

P.S. Don't use any of what I said the last interview, it won't go well.

Many places don't check references until you're the final one.

You probably have got the job subject to your references being satisfactory.  If they are, you have the job.  If they're not, you get rejected and next person in line gets the job.

You might want to call back on Friday and ask if they've got the last reference yet.  If not, find out which referee it is and give them a call yourself and ask them to please provide it, as some employers just don't view references as urgent and might not be worried about hurrying.

If they had been that interested in you they would have called you back for 2nd interview while waiting for 2nd reference coming in - shortlist usually 10-12 with large companies. The interviews I have been to usually do a credit check after the references.
