I just saw on the home page of answers that Texas is named Texas because "is the Spanish form of a native word for friends." I've lived in Mexico now (I'm Texan) for over 3 years and in Spanish roof is tejas and they used to use X's instead of J's (for example the town Ajijic is sometimes spelled Axixic) and Texas was the "roof" of Mexico because it's at the top. Doesn't that sound like it would be the reason for the name? Which is it?

  1. The word "Texas" is based on a word used by Caddo Indians meaning "friends".

  2. Well, yes. I live on the border of Mexico and Texas, and the Indian word for friend is Tejas, or so that is the legend. It could be any meaning in any culture or legend, but this word is definitely the origin of the word Texas, regardless of where the word came from.

Very inquisitive. I liked this question.
