It is for google maps. They drive around all the streets in the US (mostly main streets for now) so that you can get a ground level view when using google maps. It is really helpful when you are looking up directions and want to see what certain intercetions or landmarks will look like.

www.google.com/maps has street views that you can actually see pictures of the street you are looking at.  its cool. ive never seen the car though
