If you want a total control of your group memberships and just sending invitations to other interested people, you can make a restricted group and this is how:

depends on how you created this new group-

management- under group settings click membership- Membership Type and Welcome Message (Edit) <- click the edit-

if you created a closed group, there will be no options here- otherwise options you'd see is Open, Restricted and Closed

click save changes if you clicked on any setting change
