I work a full time job and am wondering will I be taxed for the part time job or do I need to earn so much with him to be taxed. Or will I have to pay tax on the cash I earn with him anyways since I filled out the W-4

  1. So far so good.  While he paid you out of his pocket, he had you fill out a W-4.  That indicates he will be giving you a W-2 at the end of the year and will fill in the numbers correctly.  When you file, you will include both W-2s  (Think of them as 1 giant W-2 and you report the total wages from both and total withholding from both.)

If he continues to pay you with cash, you really, really need to write the amounts down and deposit them in your bank account when paid.  That way if there is an issue, you have some proof of your income.

I expect he'll get back to you with a "pay stub."

  2. Whether he pays you cash or with a check, what you earn on the part time job is taxable income to you and must be reported on your tax return.

  3. You will be taxed on your TOTAL taxable income, regardless of the source. That includes full-time jobs, part-time jobs, jobs as independent contractors, interest, dividends, sales, anything.

  4. Your taxes will be based on your total income from both jobs added together.
