  1. all apologies helps a bit to move up and down the neck a bit.

    but learn a few chords

and w/ that you can play "gloria" "wild thing"

  2. JustinGuitar.com click the beginners course on the left and start learning! Its free but if you took that lesson in person it would be 400 dollars but people donate for him because its that helpful of a website.

  3. Learn some chords first, they're absolutely basic to learning guitar.  If you don't know chords and can't switch between them quickly and easily and keep a steady rhythm going with your right hand at the same time, YOU CAN'T PLAY GUITAR,  I don't care how many riffs you've learned off of tabs.

Being able to play rhythm chords, cleanly, solidly in time and smoothly is the foundation of guitar playing.  Ignore the self-taught idiots who tell you to go look up tabs online and learn riffs immediately.  If you actually want to become a good musician on guitar, you won't get there by learing "riffs" or solos or intros or other bits and pieces of songs on guitar,  you need to learn to play COMPLETE SONGS from start to finish.  And for that you MUST learn chords and rhythm FIRST.  A basic knowledge of scales and music theory has to come next, and ear training so you can figure out your own guitar parts without being totally dependent on tabs, and play along with other people.

OTOH, if you have no serious interest in actually learning to make music on guitar and are only interested in impressing your gullible friends by being able to play a few seconds worth of the intro to this song or a bit of the solo to that song, then look up the tabs and knock yourself out.    Otherwise, learn the BASICS first, then move on to tabs later.

  4. It's a fantastic instrument, good on ya for learning!

When I first started, I learnt the riff to Come As You Are:

    A       0    0         2     2

    E0012   2    2210   00                 Repeat

And the Smoke on The Water riff is really good to get your hands used to forming very basic chord shapes.

Adam's Song by BLink 182 is quite an easy picking riff that goes a bit further than Come As You Are if you're feeling up to a challenge, and when you are a bit better with chords, try learning My Happiness by Powderfinger.

Something I would recommend is searching for tab of finger warm up exercises, these are a must to loosen up your fingers, especially in the early days where you aren't so used to moving in that way. Just basic, chromatic up and down the neck patterns which also introduce you to your fretboard a bit more.

I would also suggest learning scales early - major minor and pentatonic - all of which you will find on any good guitar site. I left scales until years after starting which was a big mistake because I wasn't so motivated to learn them.

Best wishes with it, it's absolutely awesome the stuff you can do with a guitar!
