Question:

I just started running and my shins are killing me. Why?

Its only my shins. No other part of my body. I cant tell if its the bone or muscle that hurts. At fisrt it was a dull pain but it has gottin worse.

Iv been running about two weeks now. Anyone know whats going on?

  1. Running can put a lot of pressure on your shins. They may just be adjusting.


  2. They are called shin splints.  There are muscles in your shins which you need to build up.  See my source below.  They will eventually go away but I agree they do hurt.

  3. Sounds like shin splints, as the previous answerers stated.  It's caused by not stretching, or from running on your toes (rather than the more shock-absorbing heel-to-toe motion).  It could also be due to the way you run and if you pronate, which makes you more susceptible to shin splints.

    Ice them, focus on using the whole of your foot to absorb shock (heel-to-toe), and potentially look into a good pair of running shoes.  Running on softer surfaces will help too.

    hereis what I suggested

    1. always have a warm up and cool down stretch..

    2. slow down and walk in between running.

    3. allow a day to allow muscle to recover.

    4. meawhile use this exercise

    get a towel and roll them and then sit on chair and your feet flat..then use your toe to unwrap the towel..you will feel your shin muscle

    and exercise, you can do is ,.

    put your toe on some firm surface and then lower your feet..back of your feet.

    and then stretch..you can probably search on internet.

    give it a rest and don't start too much too fast.

    my shin hurt before too when I start too much too fast..

    smile, but proud that you're exercise. just don't go from 0 to 1000 within 2 week, do like 0 to 100 sound better..

  7. Could be shin splints, could be the shoes, or could be you are low on potassium.  Try eating a banana before you run and make sure to stetch and see if it gets better!

  9. I'm positive you probably have shin splints. Its caused by the force of ur feet hitting the ground and the pressure radiating up your shins. Just go talk to a doctor

  10. you're getting shin splints. I usually ice them, but they're a pain and they don't really go away. its when the muscle right next to the bone is pulled/hurts

  12. its just shin splints, your body isnt used to running a lot and the pounding of your feet on the ground can cause really bad shin splints. any time you start to run your going to be sore.

    just give it a while and your body will get used to it.

    if it never stops hurting use an elipitcal

    i always get them when i run on concrete.

    but i've found that i don't get them when i run on the highschool track...........which is like rubber or something...

  16. Yay! Glad to hear you're running! Thought you should know I just began running a bit ago too, and maybe you are overworking it by not giving yourself enough down time, or maybe you aren't stretching enough afterwards?! I stretch for 15 minutes after I run each time, and I have never felt pain on the day after, but yeah, sometimes when I am running it can hurt.  It also depends on your heel strike, like which part of your foot hits the pavement first.  The website below gave me a great beginner program to start running!

  19. Shin splints. To relieve it before/after your exercise, stretch out. Bend over and try to touch your toes, that relieves the pain when I got them at the start of my track season. As for when you return home, soak in a tub of hot water.

    they are caused from running and having your shins in between your top half and your feet hitting the pavement. My friend had them really bad, very similar to what you are describing. she sat in the hot tub a lot and slowed made sure she stretched before her jog.

  21. First thing you need to do is invest in some good running shoes that match your arch. Stretch a lot before and after you run. Start off slow and gradually build up your legs as their not use to the extra stress of running. Also try to run on flat ground or even a slight incline. Its the downhill running that does the most damage because it's harder to keep good form and you tend to stomp instead of run. That's another thing, try to keep good form when running. It should be smooth and easy not choppy. Keep running and give yourself a day or two of rest and you'll forget you ever had shin splints. It just takes time.

  22. put cold water on it, and constintly rub it yourself in a movement going down.. do not pull the rub upwards, keep it in the direction going down. The shin does this because of the lack of blood reaching the legs. Messgaing it in this manner will clear the blocked flow of blood.

  24. your cramping up probably or your just not used to running... try putting ben g*y on  and eat bananas and oranges(they provent you from cramping up)

  25. It's called shin splints.  It is when you stomp on the ground very hard after running while trying to slow down.  To prevent it, try slowing down very slowly, not suddenly.  Remedies are wrap it in a bandage sports wrap and ice it if possible.  Good Luck with running

  26. If you are a beginer, and are running on hard surface, you prbably have shin splints

  28. It happens when you start out.

    Warm up good, start out slow and short distances and work you way up.  Then warm down slowly.

  29. Shin Splints. Super common for beginner runners. Ice alot, make sure to stretch your calfs, and see if you need new shoes. Shin splints suck, I know.
