I just switch jobs...I have already paid my max on my social security tax this year...Why am I paying SS tax?

How do I pervent them from taking out from my paycheck my Social Security tax? Do I get it back at the end of the year??

  1. Your new job doesn't know about your old job as far as withholding goes. Yes, you will get it back.


  2. The excess tax, 6.2% of anything over $102,000 will be treated as extra withholding on your 2008 tax return.

  3. Each employer takes it out up to ther max, you can't stop that.  But yes, when you file your tax return, you'll get the extra back.  You show it on line 67 of a 1040 form

  4. You still have to pay.

    You will get a credit on your 1040 for the excess Social Security withholding.


  5. As has been noted already, the excess social security will be a credit on your return for 2008.  You might want to adjust your W-4 to prevent more tax being withheld than you need.
