I just took 2 button-cell batteries out of my son's mouth.?

I am worried he may have swallowed one. We do not have health insurance at this time, and the button cell battery was no more than 7 or 8 mm. in size. Should I wait it out and look for symptoms? The closest hospital is hours away as well, and no I can't bring him to the doctor any bit faster. My mother said that if I took 2 out then there was probably only 2 to begin with, she said most things that take them don't use more than 2.

  1. I suggest you call poison control (1-800-222-1222) just to be sure.

Based on the information in the Times article I linked to, you may not want to take a laid back attitude with this. Sure he will p**p it out, but batteries can contain some nasty stuff.

BTW, my daughter definitely has at least one toy with more than 2 button batteries.

  2. Check to see if the nearest hospital has a call-a-nurse line.  If it was something that small other than a battery, I would say waiting would be fine.  However, a battery can be dangerous.  Maybe you could call and get their professional, medical opinion.

  3. If he did, it will pass.

kids swallow coins , rocks etc all the time.

    stop over reacting.

I've never seen a 3 pack of button cells used anywhere.

  4. ask him if its not to late just say did you swallow that or is it in there and point to his tummy,  i would take my daughter to the hospital i didnt have insurance a coupl of times and its always safe then sorry. MAKE SURE YOU GET THAT INSURANCE:} he'll be okay just keep hi insight at all times

  5. a swallowed battery can kill a child because of the acid in them, if there is any doubt in your mind, insurance or not, you better get that baby to be checked.

have you never opened  the battery hatch on something that contained that type of battery and found they had "leaked" and corroded?  but hey, i guess its your son. personally  id be worried.

  6. why weren't you watching him you better go get a public aid card and that baby to the hospital and move out that country area were nothing is near you

  7. you should take him to the hospital right away. you can't risk battery acid being in his stomach. It could do serious damage.

  8. He'll just p**p it out. If you don't see it come out in a day or two, call the doctor. But you may want to let them know what happened beforehand.

Hard to say how many there really were, but I'd say it was probably two. Just keep and eye out for his p**p. And see if his behavior changes at all or his temp goes up. If so, call the hospital/doctor's office. Otherwise, give it a day or two.

    ** ADD **

Kids find things that even adults can't see. They pull things out of crevices...don't go blaming this mother like that! It was a simple accident here. Kids put everything in their mouths. Sometimes it's hard to have eyes in the back of your head and watch their every move. Cuz you know, I'm sure she already feels guilty enough. Most normal parents would understand that some things just happen....
