I just transplanted some ferns and they are all limp, dry and breaking off - too much water or not enough?

  1. I am thinking you damaged the tiny feeder roots when you dug them up, probably dug too close and didn't have a firm root ball.

At any rate you can still try to keep them alive by keeping the soil moist and no full sun on the ferns. Even if you have to cut the top of the fern off about 4" above ground, that'll give the roots more energy and a chance to regroup.

  2. Never enough water for a fern.  They like a shady, damp environment.  They should be fine, after they get established.  As long as they aren't getting too much sun.  Do keep watering them!

  3. You can't water them too much! They love it!

  4. ferns should be transplanted in mid may. im not sure why they dont transplant well outside of spring? good luck.

  5. If you stick your finger into the dirt a bit and feel dryness, it's not enough water. If it's wet to the touch, then they're fine.

The sad fact is some plants just don't survive being transplanted... water might not even be an issue.  I don't know how many violets I've had die on me when it was time to move them to a bigger pot. Plants are lame. .-.
