  1. Birth Certificate/ Social Security Card

  2. A certified copy of your birth certificate (one with the raised seal on it) and proof of residence--that can be a bank statement or one of several other things.  The best place to see your state's rules (they vary from state to state) is to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles website for your state and look--all states post the ID requirements and alternatives online. The agency might be called the "Division of Drivers Services, or something like that. If you have any questions, they'll also have a customer service number on the website you can call.

  3. Uhh.. on man this was a long time ago. I know that i just changed my name and state, and I had to bring something showing my new address, and my marriage license. But i think for you i would bring your Social Security card, maybe your birth certificate just to be safe. Maybe a school id.

Call ahead to the DMV and see what you exactly need to bring.

  4. Just to be clear, a drivers license and a state ID are two separate things.  For both you will need to show your birth certificate and furnish your SSN (though I don't think you need to physically produce the card.)

To get a picture / state ID (it looks the same as a drivers license) you will pay a fee of $10, fill out forms, and have your photo taken.

To get a drivers license, you will need to do a little more, depending on your state.  Usually you will need to produce your learners permit / level 1 license, certificate of completion from your drivers ed program (often two parts), and proof that you took and passed your road test.

Regardless, your SOS may require more information than other states -- it never hurts to be prepared, so call ahead.
