  1. Try www.horserentals.com and then click on state and then Florida. I don't know how much you weigh but there is a stable in Vermont that takes riders up to 225 pounds. Good luck and have fun!!

  2. I wonder if I would be able to ride also, but I wont even embarrass myself. I am 6' tall and Im sure every bit of 280.....would I really bereak a horses back?

  3. I'm also overweight and did lose some weight because I felt like it wasn't fair to the horses (but no one ever told me to do this).   Weight is only one factor in determining whether you should be riding a particular horse.  Your height, general fitness, riding skill, the horse's size, whether he has a bad back etc are also important.  Most school barns have some horses that can carry overweight riders.  Remember, even though you may be overweight I'm sure there are male riders who weight a lot more.  I think you should be open with the various stables you're considering riding at and see if they have any suitable horses.  And, if they say you need to lose weight, I doubt it will be very much and riding is a great motivation to do so.

  4. First I'll tell you this: A horse can often carry about 20% of his own weight. For a 1000 pound horse, 20% would be 200 pounds, rider AND tack. So figure out how much you weigh and then add one about 10 pounds for the saddle(an English saddle, Western saddles are often much more.  I rode horses for 10 years and know a lot about them. It is true all horses have their weight limit, but there are plenty of strong and larger horses who can carry quite a bit of weight. If a regular horse cant, find a place that has a draft horse that can be ridden, I rode one once, he was huge, was a Shire horse, but lots of fun! They don't use drafts to much for ridding but there has to be someplace around you that has one that can be ridden. Suggest ridding bareback maybe if you know how to ride, this takes off 10 pounds or so. Putting to much weight on a horses back can result in pressure on their spinal cord and can cause damage, so make sure that the horse seems comfortable and is walking with ease.

  5. Not familiar with your area.  But you could also try posting this same question in the pets/horse area and may get different results.

I suggest finding a ranch with typical trail horses with draft breeding if you really feel you're fat - better define fat - are ya like 5 foot tall and 300 pounds or do ya just have some baby fat at 5'6" and 200 lbs?  They're very different....

Many of the best trail horses have draft breeding - these horses are becoming more and more popular due to sure-footedness and good disposition.  Most of the trail horses contracted to "dude ranches" out west are part draft for these reasons (+ they are easy keepers).

Dee - look around on the net, there's plenty of "fat" people riding.  Look at a lot of the reining trainers and real well known professionals - they certainly aren't slim.

Fat isn't so much the problem as much as ability - some skinny people are less able to control or less knowledgeable about how to control a horse than some really fat people.

Don't quit - keep looking for the right people to help you - I think if you get out there and really get to riding, it'll help you get back in shape.  Use those muscles!

    Have fun!

  6. easy!
