I just watched a motorbike video on youtube and they were doing a "roll-on test". what is a "roll-on test"?

and they were starting the test in 6th, then did another test in 5th, if thats significant at all...?

  1. It is used to measure acceleration speeds.

    Example if a magazine were testing 3 different bikes, they would roll test all three from the same speed (say 40mph), then measure the acceleration speed to say 70mph in top gear.


  2. i believe a roll-on test basic definition when it comes to the automotive world is that whatever is completing the test is "rolling" when the test starts.... so when you usually do a quarter mile in a vehicle you start at a stand still but during a roll on test you would start at say 20 mph or such when you cross the line to begin your quarter mile.... i think they do these tests to analyze differing rpm acceleration rates and such.... the "6" or "5" refer to the gear that their in while performing the test....

  3. A roll on test is when the testers have the bikes moving all at a predetermined speed and gear, usually one of the higher gears. It is a test used typically to determine which bike accelerates best while in the middle part of the powerband, such as zipping away from traffic or passing cars.
