  1. I think he was always meant to be there.  Like, he was there in a past life.

  2. I agree with ome... He became posessed with the spirit of the original crazy caretaker.

  3. It was the spirit of the hotel which possessed him. As it was built on an indian burial ground. His own spirit was absorbed into the hotel after his death, hence becoming part of it and appearing in the pictures. REDRUM! REDRUM!

  4. Jack was a real person but he was troubled.  The hotel, apparently, worked on troubled people's minds and can find their weak spots to make them kill.  Jack died and joined all the other "haunted" people.  He had "always" been there -- his kind, actually - troubled, drinking problems, couldn't hold a job-- just like Grady and those before.  When he died, he joined the others and was in the pictures.  Hard to rationalize but effective and very creepy.

  5. The people at the bar were all ghosts, Jack was a real person, but he was possesed by the spirit of the original caretaker..  that is how I read it anyway...  the old guy knew it was the same spirit who lived in Jack.

  6. I would say that he was possessed by the caretaker's spirit, so he was part of the permanent staff of the hotel.  He was added into the family photo, so to speak.

Isn't it a creepy story?  I watched this movie with my husband to be the night before we were married. Needless to say, I did not sleep.

  7. I haven't seen the movie but I read the book so I might be able to help.

Jack was sort of possessed by the "spirits" if you like in the hotel. Everyone who died in the hotel stayed there so the hotel "shined" more than most. So in the afterlife there were people from all times staying at the hotel like the people who went the the masked ball, Grady the caretaker, the woman in the bath. Everyone. So when Jack died in the hotel he stayed in the other spirits who had also died there. So I assume the photo was of all of the people who are in the afterlife of the hotel and the year 1921 doesn't really apply - time doesn't matter after the people die.
