I keep getting a security notifications pop-up. Is it a virus or will it hurt my computer?

Sometimes I run it and my computer tells me the software isn't certified or something or that it's not safe so I cancel the run. Sometimes the pop-up just starts running on it's own. I don't know how to keep my computer safe from it.

TRY MALWAREBYTES ANTI-MALWARE,,,AND CHECK YOU'RE TASK MANAGER AND LOOK FOR A SUSPICIOUS FILE THAT HAS TO DO WITH WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT

Block pop-up ads and remove spyware .

It depends on which program is forcing the popup.  Could be either or.  Best thing to do would be run the first step of the following virus removal guide.  The online scanner will tell you if you're infected or not:
